See what happened when people met Jesus.
Yesterday Jesus examined worship in the temple; today, in the upper room, He shows His disciples what love looks like.

Watch the companion video, then continue reading to examine the biblical testimony in its full context.
John tells us that Jesus knows His hour has come. He knows where He came from, where He is going, and that the Father has given all things into His hands. Then He rises from supper, takes a towel, and begins washing His disciples’ feet.
The Lord Takes the Servant’s Place.
Foot washing belonged to the lowly work of hospitality. Jesus does not perform it because He has forgotten His authority; John emphasizes that He acts while fully conscious of who He is.
Peter Resists.
Peter objects when Jesus comes to him. Jesus answers, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Peter needs to receive before he can imitate.
An Example to Follow.
After washing their feet, Jesus tells the disciples that if their Lord and Teacher has served them this way, they also ought to serve one another.
Love as I Have Loved You.
The scene moves toward Jesus’ “new commandment”: love one another as He has loved them. The standard is not abstract kindness. Jesus Himself becomes the measure of discipleship.
Tomorrow, listen closely to Jesus’ words about cleansing, service, and the new commandment.
